Constipation

Constipation occurs when there is abnormally delayed or infrequent passage of bowel movements. Everything that we eat and drink works its way through our digestive system until it reaches the large intestine also known as the colon. The colon collects the food wastes, absorbs the water from them and prepares them for evacuation. However, in some instances, more liquid than what is desirable will be absorbed. As a result, fecal wastes become too dry, hard and compact. Naturally it is very hard for your body to push these wastes out of the colon. When this fecal matter stays stuck in the colon for an extended period of time, bloating, gas and a feeling of general discomfort will also occur.

Constipation is caused by a myriad of factors. These include poor eating habits, pregnancy, lack of movement or exercise, abuse of laxatives, dehydration, weight problems, stress, certain medications (ask your Doctor), sluggish gallbladder/liver functioning, and irritable bowel syndrome. If you suffer from any of these things, then you are more susceptible to having constipation problems.

There are numerous ways of addressing constipation and one of these is Colonic Hydrotherapy in conjunction with lifestyle changes. Colonics are effective, safe and offer quick relief. Unlike long-term laxative use, Colonics are not addictive and do not damage the colon over the long-term. Your Therapist will also make suggestions for diet and lifestyle specific to your colon and overall health.

How Colonic Hydrotherapy works is pretty simple and straightforward. Basically, a device is inserted into the anus, which allows filtered water to flow into the colon. This helps rehydrate and loosen the hard and dried fecal matter that has accumulated from constipation and over the client’s lifetime. Once these wastes are softened, they flushed out of the colon from a second tube.

Unlike some other ways of relieving constipation, Colonic Hydrotherapy offers quick and fast relief within an hour’s appointment. Chronic or severe constipation can be treated with a series of regular Colonic appointments that relieve the body of unwanted wastes, and re-train the colon to function better.

To keep constipation from recurring, speak with your Doctor, a Nutritionist or your Colon Therapist; and follow these very practical but effective tips:

  • Maintain a diet that is rich in fibre like fresh fruits, vegetables, legumes, and nuts. Fibre helps the intestines do their jobs, and makes bowel movements smoother and faster.
  • Drink lots of fluids. Consume as much water, and fresh vegetable and fruit juices or blended juices as you can. Fresh juices are ideal compared to drinks such as reconstituted apple juice that contain a high amount of sugar, and lack vital enzymes and fibre. It's simple, the more liquids you take in, the softer your bowels are and the easier it will be to push them out.
  • Exercise and maintain a regular bowel movement pattern. The more time that wastes spend in your intestines, the harder they get. If your body does not push them out as regularly as it should, you will likely get constipated. Start your morning with two cups of water and some type of exercise appropriate for your body before breakfast to encourage your body’s digestion and elimination processes. Take a walk at some point during the day; fresh air and sunshine will also reduce stress.
  • If you need to use the washroom, do so. Holding in a bowel movement when your body is ready to expel it sends your body the wrong message.
